The Corcos Riad in Marrakech Mellah
This is the historical house of the Corcos family in the Mellah, Marrakech Medina. Almost certainly one of, if not the first house built in the Mellah. It is perfectly placed in the geographical centre of the Mellah quarter and is a massive building, with foundations and supporting walls dating to 1568 or thereabouts. This is when the Jewish inhabitants of the Mouassine district were offered a land-swap in order to clear space for the big new Mouassine Mosque. The Corcos family came to great prominence in Jewish affairs in Marrakech, culminating in an alliance with the Glaoui family in French dominated Morocco in the first half of the twentieth century. The fall of the French protectorate precipitated the fall of the Glaoui and the Corcos families. The Jewish exodus from Morocco in the 1980’s let this incredible property fall into ruin. Now, Bosworth Property Marrakech is restoring this unique building to it’s former glory. Our exploratory work has revealed incredible historical detail.
The Corcos family, traders and smiths, were long established in Mouassine before their move to the Mellah. They accepted the land swap deal with open arms and built a stronghold in the geographical centre of the new quarter, under royal protection. They moved their business to this house. And built a fortress, full of underground passages and chambers, never revealed to this day.
The Corcos Riad in Marrakech Mellah was not just a home. It’s astonishing underground structures, still being excavated, point to metallurgical workshops, safe rooms and much more. The Corcos property is unique in that it’s secret subterranean volume leads to a new perspective on the Marrakech Mellah. One of secret workshops, hidden from the ever present eye of the tax man. One of hidden underground rooms where people could hide from persecution. One of unsuspected wealth and inspired architecture.
Under this Riad is a whole new secret world of Marrakech archaeology. It is not public. It is unique to this astonishing Jewish construction. Chambers. Tunnels. Air vents. A whole subterranean stratus of Marrakech Medina never seen before. The Corcos Riad Marrakech Mellah.
